Apple says its first weekend iPhone sales are off to its strongest start ever.
The company announced Monday that it is "on pace" to beat last year's opening weekend sales record of 10 million units sold. In an unusual move, Apple refrained from providing the exact initial pre-sale figures for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, which went on sale Saturday morning.
"We are on pace to beat last year's 10 million unit first-weekend record when the new iPhones go on sale September 25," a spokesperson for Apple said in a statement to Mashable. "As many customers noticed, the online demand for iPhone 6s Plus has been exceptionally strong and exceeded our own forecasts for the preorder period. We are working to catch up as quickly as we can."
The new iPhone models are the same in appearance as the previous generation, but include new software features like 3D Touch and come in a new color: Rose Gold. The 6s Plus, in particular, sold out fast online.
Investors appeared satisfied with the news: Apple stock was up 2% in pre-market trading following the announcement.
